Your car suggests a route to a local coffee shop automatically, based on how often you stop there after work. Your laptop suddenly boots up faster and brims with newfound speed because it can predict what data you will need and what you won't. Your DNA reveals to you some simple steps you should take to improve your long-term health, long before you turn 50.
These are the sorts of things futurists have been predicting for a while. But this year, they're primed to go mainstream. While AI can help computers become smarter and more helpful, predictive technology can improve our lives more directly and in more tangible ways by predicting problems and dangers before they occur. Computers won't just live in the present, helping us plan our day. They will use a vast storehouse of previously collected data to predict our future and help us to adjust, in real time, for that future.
Here are five places where we're already seeing it happen.
Computers are paramount to every successful business and the need to have a contingency plan in place should anything happen to your precious data is a necessity. One of the worst possible incidents for a company is a server failure. Unfortunately such a disastrous thing can occur with just a little bit of bad luck. Smooth running computer systems are crucial to the everyday running of our business and on a larger scale our economies. Though there are a number of ways you can protect your precious data should your computer system fail and continue smooth running of your business.Statistics suggest large companies put between 2-4 percent of IT budgets into disaster recovery planning in the hope of avoiding larger long term losses. How you plan for such an occurrence can have a crucial say in how you come out of it. Many of the best companies that offer a disaster recovery service will provide a disaster recovery assessment and disaster planning to show you how prepared you are and how you can be better organised if a server fails - remember prevention is the best form of cure.Mirroring data to an offsite location or just backups onto a cloud service, another server or hard drive can be a saving grace if you suffer server failure, and will allow you to continue unharmed. The uses of simple items such as surge protectors are also a necessity and are a straightforward but vital aspect of protecting your data.If the worse should happen there are a number of ways in which you can get back your data. Doing so is very important, companies who lose their data and end up with information find it very hard to compete and many suffer huge consequences.Disaster recovery solutions such as data recovery will mean you can be sure you retrieve most or all of the lost data; this is a last resort but is crucial if you've lost all of your data. Emails and work place data can also be retrieved by similar methods, as can recovery of client's networks with little hassle and virtually complete continuity.Should you fear being or be the unfortunate victim of such a failure, then many companies also offer disaster recovery validation and testing afterwards. This will help you test your recovery plans and ensure they're up to scratch before or after a nightmare scenario such as the aforementioned. So should you suffer a failed server it is not the end of the world or your business, just think about it rationally and you can get it fixed and recover all the crucial data that your business thrives on easily and quickly with little disruption.
As you always need Business continuity then you should pick our Disaster Recovery Services and Cloud Service. To know about recovery services browse at: http://www.redstor.com
BBC News reports (“Hundreds of Afghan women jailed for ‘moral crimes,’”, March 28) on the ?[h]undreds of Afghan women [currently] in jail” for “crimes” including running away and extra-marital sex....
BBC News reports (?Hundreds of Afghan women jailed for ?moral crimes,??, March 28) on the ?[h]undreds of Afghan women [currently] in jail? for ?crimes? including running away and extra-marital sex. The story follows a report from Human Rights Watch that casts blame on the government of Hamid Karzai, noting that ten years after Taliban rule these outrageous ?moral crimes? continue to be punished ? and brutally so.
As strong believers in individual sovereignty and autonomy, market anarchists argue that the state?s principal manner of acting is to make peaceful interactions crimes while protecting the institutional crime of ruling class elites. In an essay titled Vices Are Not Crimes, published in 1875, American lawyer and anarchist Lysander Spooner defined crimes simply as ?those acts by which one man harms the person or property of another.?
Market anarchists still hold roughly to Spooner?s formulation and accordingly see the state, which necessarily initiates force against person and property, as simply a glorified criminal enterprise. Under the pretext of protection people from themselves and from their own vices, the state engages in all kinds of villainy and misconduct.
Further, the predicates of an economically thriving and prosperous society are inextricably bound to those of a more generally free and peaceful society ? one in which the discretion of individuals is left unmolested. As both a practical matter and a philosophical one, freedom in economic affairs can?t be isolated in any meaningful way from freedom in what might be considered ?private affairs.?
Market anarchists appreciate the link between all kinds of freedoms, and are committed to a comprehensive understanding of liberty that accounts for their causal interconnectedness. The entire economic system of the present moment is built upon prohibitions against perfectly peaceful and consensual activities, and not just those such as drug use that some regard as ?vices.?
Zoning laws dictate where you?re allowed to open a business; building codes determine the kinds of dwellings that you may construct; and professional licensure restricts the choices you have as to how you?ll make a living. This list of banned though genuinely peaceful undertakings goes on and on, and all supposedly to protect us from ourselves.
All of these interventions into the economic aspect of human life create scarcities that represent both a windfall for the powerful interests they protect and an accompanying definite and significant diminution in overall human freedom.
Observing that ?very small results? had come of ?efforts to draw the lines between the virtues and the vices,? Spooner and contemporary market anarchists prefer to consult a more definite boundary. The exercise of coercive authority over the individual, we argue, is all that a free society ought to prohibit. As in Afghanistan, if the business of defining ?vice? is left to the state, all free people will before long be branded criminals.
In a stateless society, the full scope of nonviolent, non-invasive action thus remains open to every member of society, unhindered by the meddlesome and arbitrary commands of the state. And from the free interplay of individuals, even granting their vices, a more vibrant and productive society is educed.
Those who lament the moral decline of society would do well to focus their disapproval toward the state, the present day?s (and history?s) foremost source of injustice and immorality. If Afghanistan is unique at all ? and arguably it?s not ? it is only so in the degree of its monstrousness, not in its barbaric punishment of innocent people.
Anarchists ask that individuals who leave others alone in their legitimate prerogatives themselves be left alone. Were that one simple rule observed, fully and across the board, the state would pass away and crimes like those in Afghanistan would be a memory.

What can poop tell us about orangutans? Well, for one thing, a study of wild orangutan feces has revealed that these great apes, unlike some other species, are not chronically stressed by ecotourism.
Scat shows no scare in a study, published March 15 in PLoS One, that analyzed fecal glucocorticoid metabolite (fGM) levels of Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) in the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary in in the Malaysian state of Sabah between 2008 and 2009. The community-operated organization Red Ape Encounters, which operates there, maintains strict ecotourism guidelines designed to protect the apes.
The research team collected feces samples 24 hours before ecotourism visits, as well as the day of and the day after. Many of the samples came from two orangutans?Jenny, a then-32-year-old female, and Etin, her 11-year-old offspring?both of whom were gradually habituated to encounters with ecotourists over a period of several years. The rest came from four other unidentified orangutans that were not habituated to humans. In each case, the samples collected the day after the encounters showed elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol. But that wasn?t necessarily a bad thing.
?An elevated cortisol level in response to ecotourists would be completely natural and expected,? says the study?s lead author, Michael P. Muehlenbein, professor of anthropology at Indiana University Bloomington. ?It just means an activation of the sympathetic nervous system. Short-term fluctuation of cortisol levels is completely to be expected under most circumstances.?
Muehlenbein and his fellow researchers were concerned that the orangutans might have shown extremely elevated levels of cortisol or none at all. That would have indicated levels of chronic stress and a systemic breakdown in the animals, as has occurred in some other species regularly encountered by ecotourists. For example, yellow-eyed penguins (Megadyptes antipodes) have exhibited significantly lowered breeding success in populations exposed to tourism, while ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) showed degraded fur coats. (The paper equates these reactions to post-traumatic stress disorder in humans.)
But short-term fluctuations showed, at least on an fGM level, that the orangutans were not exhibiting signs of chronic stress. ?You need the fight-or-flight response,? Muehlenbein says. ?If you become habituated to a process, and you don?t react accordingly when there?s a danger, then you have a problem.?
Muehlenbein says the fGM test is just one more item in the veterinary or conservation toolbox to make sure that animals encountering humans are healthy. ?Cortisol metabolites are very sensitive to a number of things, such as disease, diet and sexual activity. It?s not a perfect measure. It should be combined with the other tools that we already have.?
According to the paper, tourism accounts for 9 percent of world GDP and can contribute greatly to conservation efforts for rare species. In the case of orangutans, at least, ecotourism done right does not appear to be harming the apes in the process. Red Ape Encounters?s guidelines limit visitations to groups of seven and a period of one hour. Sick tourists are excluded, and all visitors must keep a 10-meter minimum distance between themselves and the orangutans.
Muehlenbein is now working at a nearby orangutan rehabilitation center, where he is interviewing ecotourists about their behavior to try to calculate the risk for disease transmission from humans to animals. Apes have been known to catch coughs, colds and other viruses from humans, which can prove fatal. Although this human-to-primate transmission has been documented, there is no conclusive evidence to date of disease transmission from tourists to apes. ?We know that a significant number of travelers visit ecotourist sites even though they haven?t been well-enough vaccinated or they show signs of illness,? Muehlenbein says. Some orangutan tourism sites might habituate their animals more rapidly, overexpose them to humans or even allow people to touch or feed the apes, all of which could contribute to chronic stress and, in turn, make the orangutans more susceptible to human diseases. ?Humans pose an undocumented risk. We should put time, money and effort into hiring health professionals at these primate-based destinations and educating tourists about the risk of disease transmission.?

To date, it seems that Mountain View has employed a loose definition of the term "integrated," neglecting to offer such Google Voice features as a unified messaging inbox, or an option to access voicemails without switching back to the dedicated app. Well we have some good news for those of you that haven't completely abandoned voice-based communication. The latest GV update adds a special topping to that Ice Cream Sandwich (sorry, Gingerbread men), letting you launch visual voicemails directly from your Android call log -- and bringing Voice integration a step closer to actually being integrated. You'll also have the power to slow down a message to jot down a callback number, or speed it up to get to the juicy stuff, like a callback number. Full details are at the source link below, or on your very own ICS handset after a quick trip to Play.
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A new study says girls younger than age 17 can safely use emergency contraception without a prescription, and that there's no reason they should be kept from buying the drug over the counter.
The study, published in this month's Obstetrics & Gynecology, helped the Food and Drug Administration decide that the pill -- also known as Plan B or the morning-after pill -- could be purchased over the counter by women of any age. In December, however, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) overruled that decision.
"This study confirms findings from two other studies that teens are able to understand (emergency contraception) labeling in order to use it safely and effectively," said Megan L. Kavanaugh, a senior research associate at the Guttmacher Institute in New York, in an email to Reuters Health.
Kavanaugh, who was not involved with the new study, added that these findings indicate "that there is no scientific basis for the continued age restriction on over-the-counter access to Plan B One Step."
Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, led by Dr. Tina Raine, tracked girls between the ages of 13 and 17 who came into health clinics in five cities for the pill.
The pill contains the hormone progestin, which cuts the risk of pregnancy after unprotected sex by stopping the ovaries from releasing an egg.
For the new study, the girls read the information on the product's box and then told the study's staff whether or not they still wanted to use it.
The girls who still wanted to use the drug filled out surveys on why they wanted to use it and about their medical history. From that information, the study's staff determined whether the drug was appropriate for the girls.
Of the 340 girls who earned $10 for participating in the study, the staff decided 311 -- about 92 percent -- correctly used criteria to choose to use or not use the drug based on their answers.
Thirteen of those girls decided not to use the drug because the window during which it would be most effective had passed. The study's staff gave the 298 girls who correctly chose to use the drug the single-dose pill. Of those, 274 used the drug correctly.
There was no correlation between the correct decision to use the drug -- or use it correctly -- and any specific age.
"There are no medical concerns. That's why the FDA approved it for them. The concern is more a social, political concern about adolescents having access to these contraceptives," said Cynthia Harper, one of the study's authors and a professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences at UCSF.
The study did have limitations, including self-selection, because girls who choose not to use emergency contraception may be different than those who do.
The new study and its authors were funded by a grant from Teva Pharmaceuticals -- the morning-after pill's maker. Raine and Harper's salaries -- along with two of the study's staff -- were supported by the grant, and two of the authors are Teva employees. The company also covered Raine's travel to present the information to the FDA in 2007 and 2010.

Shoppers will continue to see the Fresh Local Produce sign in supermarkets, but stores will increasingly require growers to show proof of good agricultural practices, according to Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences researchers.
Good agricultural practices -- GAPs -- are food-safety standards that reduce the risk of on-farm produce contamination, according to Daniel Tobin, a doctoral candidate in Agricultural and Extension Education and the principal investigator in the study. GAPs include recommendations for safe irrigation methods, use of raw and composted animal manure, worker health and hygiene, post-harvest handling practices and traceability procedures.
On-farm, food-safety measures are critical, Tobin noted. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 48 million foodborne illnesses, including 3,000 deaths, occur each year in the United States. Previous research indicates that there is a rising number of reported outbreaks in fresh produce.
For Pennsylvania produce growers to maintain wholesale market opportunities, they will have to put forth substantial effort to comply with and verify their on-farm, food-safety practices, the researchers reported in recent issues of Food Control and the Journal of Extension.
"Growers, therefore, will need GAP training and educational materials," Tobin said. "General training about potential on-farm, food-safety hazards and preventative measures no longer will be adequate. To achieve maximum impact, the curriculum must focus on implementing and documenting GAPs so growers will be prepared to pass a GAP audit.
"In response, supermarkets have been implementing policies that require their fresh produce suppliers to attend training workshops on farm food safety and/or to verify compliance with food-safety standards through fee-based, third-party certification. In TPC an independent, third-party auditor conducts an on-site inspection to determine whether a supplier's practices and procedures comply with a certain set of standards, such as GAPs."
Produce growers who need to verify GAP conformity through third-party compliance can select among several audit agencies. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Service, in association with state departments of agriculture, offers a voluntary audit program that growers can use to verify on-farm food-safety practices. Private companies also offer audit services, but their GAP standards and documentation requirements can vary from company to company.
The Food Safety Modernization Act, signed into law in early 2011 by President Obama, mandates the Food and Drug Administration to establish mandatory minimum standards, based on known safety risks, for produce growers to implement and document.
To help develop a relevant GAP training curriculum that meets the needs of Pennsylvania growers, Penn State researchers surveyed supermarkets that operate in the state to determine their food-safety policies and practices that affect local produce growers.
Pennsylvania consumers also were surveyed because they help drive demand for produce. The researchers found that consumers are highly concerned about the safety of the produce supply.
"Assessing American consumer perceptions regarding produce safety is particularly important, because those perceptions will allow actors within the supply chain to better meet consumer demand," Tobin said. "Using data collected from Pennsylvania consumers, our study documents how consumer demographics -- and their preferences for specific attributes in fresh produce, such as local, organic and inspected for food safety -- affect their produce-safety perceptions."
Such an analysis provides important information for those seeking to implement practices that reduce the risk of foodborne contamination, Tobin explained. A clearer understanding of consumer produce-safety perceptions and preferences will allow these groups, including growers and supermarkets, to make better-informed decisions regarding their food-safety policies and practices.

The new iPad was upgraded with a display an HD junkie would give his universal remote for, but the Apple TV simply received an update to a capability many believe the original should've had the first go around: support for 1080p content. In addition to that all-important resolution bump, both this and the last-gen model received a modest software update that brings a few features and enhancements. Those tweaks aren't necessarily worth a review, if you ask us, especially since the price remains the same and existing Apple TV owners will reap the benefits of most of these improvements. Still, we'd be remiss if we didn't poke around just a bit. Follow past the break to see what's changed.

CENTRAL, La. (AP) ? When a nationally influential evangelical leader gathered dozens of pastors at his home church to hear from a presidential candidate, he had a simple message: Rick Santorum is one of us, and your parishioners should vote for him.
Nearly a hundred pastors from all over Louisiana and from as far away as Texas and Colorado accepted Family Research Council President Tony Perkins' invitation to hear a personal pitch Sunday from the former Pennsylvania senator, who met with them in a private briefing before he addressed the more than 1,400 faithful who crowded into the sanctuary at Greenwell Springs Baptist Church.
"What we need to do in this country is to rebuild that culture of life and rebuild that culture of marriage and families," Santorum said, standing in a small back room as the invited pastors gathered in an informal circle wearing handwritten name tags. "No one else talks about social issues."
In speaking to the group and then spending more than an hour with the congregation, answering Perkins' questions from the stage where Baptist Rev. Dennis Terry normally preaches, Santorum was courting the religious conservatives who are keeping him in a drawn-out fight for the GOP nomination.
Mitt Romney leads the race for delegates but has long struggled to win over a conservative GOP base that still questions his flip-flops on social issues.
Religious conservatives helped propel Santorum to victory over Romney and House Speaker Newt Gingrich in recent primaries in Mississippi and Alabama and are critical to his presidential ambitions.
Many of the Christians who shouted "Amen!" and stood to applaud Santorum's comments on Iran and his pledge to repeal President Barack Obama's national healthcare overhaul are the voters who could help him win Saturday's Louisiana primary and upcoming contests in the drawn-out GOP race.
"I know what's in his heart. It's the fact that he's a Christian," said 69-year-old Vickie Raabe, a retiree from Central who has been attending another nearby Baptist church for decades and says she will vote for Santorum.
What about Romney, the front-runner?
"I just don't like him," she said.
Implicit in many of the attendees' dislike for the former Massachusetts governor was a discomfort with his religion. Why does Valerie, a longtime worshipper who wouldn't give her last name, support Santorum instead? "Mormonism," she said, unprompted. "I don't believe that (Romney's) a Christian."
Many evangelicals say Mormons are not Christians.
Terry, the pastor at Greenwell Baptist, said in an interview: "I want to hear about (Romney's) true belief in Jesus. Mormons believe that Jesus is a created being... In the South, you know, we believe that Jesus is the son of God."
Santorum, who is Catholic, doesn't have that problem.
"I know Rick really well, and he is the real deal," said Terry, whose fiery opening remarks included an insistence that America is a Christian nation and "We don't worship Buddha! We don't worship Mohammed! We don't worship Allah!"
Perkins, the head of the socially conservative Family Research Council, can't officially endorse a presidential candidate, but he made his personal feelings clear. "I'll tell you this," he said, "I wouldn't invite just anybody to my church."
Perkins was part of a group of evangelical leaders who gathered in Texas earlier this year to select a conservative alternative to Romney, who one time supported abortion rights. They voted to back Santorum, but it wasn't immediately clear how their support could directly help him.
That's where the pastors ? and their churches ? come in. The field has narrowed, with Santorum winning in nine states and Gingrich losing in the South, his home region.
"I hope that you said something about that today from the pulpit that people need to be voting next Saturday," Perkins told the pastors' briefing.
At Greenwell Baptist, there was an intense focus on bringing faith into the public square ? and on making sure the faithful are engaged in the political process. Voter registration forms and "how to vote" guides sat on a table just inside the main entrance.
Santorum spent more than an hour answering mostly friendly questions from Perkins about his religion, his understanding of what it means to oppose abortion rights, and his positions on Iran and Israel.
"I don't believe life begins at conception," Santorum said, "I know life begins at conception."
Terry said he had invited all the GOP presidential hopefuls as well as President Barack Obama to speak at the church.
In his remarks to the congregation, Santorum steered clear of mentioning his rivals. But he told the pastor's briefing that Romney is "compromised on the issue of freedom" because of his health care record in Massachusetts and said Romney reduces the election to "management of the economy."
"If this is about management of the economy, we're going to lose," Santorum said. "This election is about bigger things."
