Hollywood responds to deadly Conn. school shooting

NEW YORK (AP) ? Hollywood has responded to the rampage at a Connecticut elementary school by pulling back on its offerings, and one star says the entertainment industry should take some responsibility for such violence.

Jamie Foxx, one of the industry's biggest stars, said Saturday as he promoted Quentin Tarantino's upcoming ultra-violent spaghetti Western-style film about slavery, "Django Unchained," that actors can't ignore the fact that movie violence can influence people.

"We cannot turn our back and say that violence in films or anything that we do doesn't have a sort of influence," Foxx said in an interview on Saturday. "It does."

In true Tarantino form, buckets of blood explode from characters as they are shot or shredded to pieces by rabid dogs in "Django Unchained."

Despite Friday's mass shooting, the press junket for the movie, which opens in theaters Christmas Day, continued in New York as scheduled on Saturday.

Tarantino, whose credits include "Pulp Fiction" and the "Kill Bill" volumes, said he was tired of defending his films each time the nation is shocked by gun violence. He said "tragedies happen" and blame should fall on those guilty of the crimes.

Foxx's co-star Kerry Washington said she believes the film's explicit brutality serves an important purpose in educating audiences about the atrocities of slavery.

"I do think that it's important when we have the opportunity to talk about violence and not just kind of have it as entertainment, but connect it to the wrongs, the injustices, the social ills," she said.

In the Newtown, Conn., massacre on Friday, a gunman killed his mother and then went to an elementary school, where he killed six adults and 20 children before committing suicide.

In response, premieres for Tom Cruise's new action movie, "Jack Reacher," in Pittsburgh and the family comedy "Parental Guidance" in Los Angeles were postponed.

Also, Fox pulled new episodes of "Family Guy" and "American Dad" that were to air Sunday to avoid potentially sensitive content. The originally scheduled episode of "Family Guy" had Peter telling his own version of the nativity story. The "American Dad" episode told the story of a demon that punished naughty children at Christmas. Both series plan to substitute reruns.

Fox also confirmed that a scheduled repeat of "The Cleveland Show" for Sunday was swapped for another rerun of that series out of the same concern.

At memorial, Obama pledges effort to reduce gun violence

NEWTOWN, Connecticut (Reuters) - President Barack Obama, speaking at a memorial service for the victims of a mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school, said on Sunday the United States was not doing enough to protect its children and pledged in coming weeks to launch an effort to reduce violence in the country.

"We can't tolerate this anymore. These tragedies must end. And to end them we must change," Obama said at a somber interfaith service.

"In the coming weeks I'll use whatever power this office holds to engage my fellow citizens from law enforcement to mental health professionals to parents and educators in an effort aimed at preventing more tragedies like this," he said. "Because what choice do we have? We can't accept events like this as routine."

Members of the audience wept when the president read the names of the 20 children and six adults who were shot at Sandy Hook Elementary school on Friday.

ANY DAY NOW (R)

Alan Cumming has long been a celebrated actor, thanks to stellar performances in everything from Cabaret to The Good Wife to his introductions of Masterpiece Theatre. Now, he stars in this story of love, acceptance and family. When a handicapped child (Isaac Leyva) is abandoned by his mother, a gay couple is determined to adopt him so they can give him the family he never had. Authorities decide the men must fight the legal system.

Touching, thoughtful, beautifully acted. Directed by Travis Fine from a true story.

HYDE PARK ON THE HUDSON (R)

It?s a single weekend in June 1939. President and First Lady Roosevelt are hosting the King and Queen of England at the Roosevelt upstate New York estate. This would have been interesting on its own, had Franklin and Eleanor been given depth and reality. Instead, most of the movie is about FDR as a lecherous manipulator and Eleanor is only present for about five minutes. The female we follow in this shallow and insulting movie is FDR?s cousin, played as bland and clueless by Laura Linley. Bill Murray is fine as FDR but the rest of the movie turns what could have been smart and entertaining into a useless soap opera.

THE MATCHMAKER (NR ? w/ English Subtitles)

The year is 1968, and we?re in a seedy quarter of Haifa, Israel. In this touching drama, we meet a mysterious, large man with a scarred face who walks with a cane. He has an unusual profession: he finds romantic matches for ?special people.? He enlists the help of a teenage boy and a woman who gives dating lessons and runs an illegal gambling club.

This movie was nominated for seven Israeli Oscars, not a surprise since it is full of heart and depth.

Is there an hourly threshold employees must pass to earn paid ...

Q. Is there a law that states the number of hours necessary to be considered full time for being eligible for paid holidays? Our handbook says an employee who works fewer than 40 hours a week is considered part time. An employee w.ho works 34 hours a week wonders if he should be eligible for paid holidays. Our handbook says he?s not. Is that OK?

A. There is no federal or Pennsylvania law defining full time or part time, so you are free to define how many hours an employee needs to work to be considered full time. There is also no law requiring paid holidays. You are free to determine how many hours an employee must work to be eligible for paid holidays. ?

Your handbook can address these issues, and it is legal to say that an employee must work 40 hours per week to receive paid holidays.

Your benefit plans may have definitions of part time and full time as well if employees must work a certain number of hours to be covered. The definitions in your handbook and your benefit plans should be consistent to minimize any confusion for employees.

?The Hobbit?: 40 questions to test your knowledge of Bilbo Baggins and co.

Do you think you know everything about the journey of Bilbo Baggins as recorded in J.R.R. Tolkien?s 'The Hobbit'? 'The Hobbit' was published as a prelude to Tolkien?s trilogy, 'The Lord of the Rings,' on September 21, 1937. Since then, the story has been revised to tie in more with the dark trilogy but still has kept more of its lighthearted fairy tale tone of the original.

'The Hobbit' has seen stage production and radio and film adaptation, the first film being composed completely of cartoon stills. The first animated film aired on US television in 1977.

The newest 'Hobbit' adaptation, directed by Peter Jackson ('The Lord of the Rings') will be a trilogy itself. Part one is set to release in theaters on Dec. 14, 2012, with Ian McKellen returning to the big screen as the wizard Gandalf and Martin Freeman playing the hobbit Bilbo Baggins. Can?t wait for 'The Hobbit' to come to theaters? Take this 40-question quiz to see if you?re a true 'Hobbit' fan.?

Canada's Supreme Court Rules Against Retransmission Fees for ...

TORONTO ? Canadian cable and satellite TV operators have won their fight in the Supreme Court of Canada against having to pay out retransmission fees for local TV signals.

The high court on Thursday in a narrow 5-to-4 decision ruled the CRTC, the country?s broadcast regulator, has no jurisdiction to impose a so-called value for signal regime on the broadcast industry.

?The provisions of the Broadcasting Act, considered in their entire context, may not be interpreted as authorizing the CRTC to implement the proposed value for signal regime,? Supreme Court justices McLachlin, LeBel, Fish, Rothstein and Moldaver said in their majority decision.

The win for cable and satellite TV operators marks a reversal from an earlier Federal Court of Appeal ruling that held the CRTC can allow domestic broadcasters to negotiate first-time compensation from carriers for their local TV signals.

The CRTC started the country?s retransmission debate when it referred the issue to the Federal Court of Appeals to secure the right to impose carriage fees for local TV signals.

As in the U.S., Canadian broadcasters have sought first-time compensation from cable and satellite TV operators as they argue their business model can no longer be sustained by advertising revenue alone.

But the Supreme Court, in ruling over-the-air TV should remain free for TV viewers, criticized the CRTC for over-reaching.

?Policy statements are not jurisdiction conferring provisions and cannot serve to extend the powers of the subordinate body to spheres not granted by Parliament,? the high court wrote.

Supreme Court justices Abella, Deschamps, Cromwell and Karakatsanis in a dissenting opinion said the CRTC?s regulatory jurisdiction under the Broadcasting Act did extend to allowing a proposed value-for-signal regime, and that there was no conflict with the federal Copyright Act, as cable and satellite operators argued.

The latest stage in Canada?s retransmission debate follows industry consolidation, which has seen major cable and satellite TV operators like BCE and Shaw Communications now avoid paying for local TV signals to newly-acquired conventional TV networks.

Millennials Will Have A Hard Time Entering The ... - Business Insider

In this day and age, the 18- to 34-year-old crowd have lived up to their reputation as perpetual renters. Most blame the trend on the housing crisis, which led so many homeowners to downsize and stunted the home buying power of younger consumers.?

But whatever trauma the Great Recession had on the minds of millennials, it hasn't stymied their hopes for owning a home of their own one day, a new study shows.?

Real estate tracker Trulia found more than 90 pecent of millennial renters plan on buying a home in the next two years.

The question is whether they'll find what they're looking for. The housing inventory has been far from stellar lately, down 23 percent since last year and a whopping 43 percent since 2010, Trulia estimates.

"Many [Millennials] think today?s low prices and low mortgage rates will last," says Jed Kolko, Trulia's Chief Economist. "They may be in for sticker shock if the cost of homeownership has returned to normal levels by the time they?re ready to buy.?

Then there's the affordability factor to consider. People in their 30s saw their wealth diminished the most during the recession, a recent Pew study found, and the underemployment rate is estimated at more than 15 percent.

It's true that home prices have been slowly rebounding, which will hopefully give sales a boost ?? 22 percent of homeowners say they'll likely sell in the next year ?? and beef up the offerings. Today, 27 percent feel more positive about owning a home than half a year ago, while 19 percent say they're more negative, according to Trulia.

It's certainly not the overwhelming majority's sentiment ?? 72 percent still say homeownership isn't their idea of the American Dream ?? but it's a hint that consumers' optimism in the housing market might steadily be returning.

"Millennials have been shaken, not scarred by the housing bust," says Kolko. ?Nearly all of them want to own a home some day, if they?re not homeowners already."

What it is to be a queen bee?

Dec. 10, 2012 ? Queen sweat bees 'choose' the role of their daughters, according to a new study published in BioMed Central's open access journal Frontiers in Zoology. The amount of food provided for the developing larvae determines whether the daughter becomes a worker or a new queen.

The sweat bee Halictus scabiosae are a primitive eusocial insect. Eusocial insects have a hierarchical society with a division of labor between reproductive queens and males, and workers. However for H. scabiosae all the adults have retained the ability to reproduce, although their role in the nest may preclude active reproduction.

Foundresses, large queen bees which have survived the winter, set up a new nest in spring. The first generation of offspring are usually smaller bodied female workers, which then help the queen in raising the next generation of reproductive (larger) females and males. However the first brood daughters may also reproduce either within the nest or after dispersing to other nests.

Researchers from the University of Lausanne investigated whether mothers restrict the food available to their first brood in order to ensure that they become workers because they are small sized, possibly easier to dominate, and so less likely to reproduce.

They found that the total amount of pollen and nectar supplied to the first brood was significantly less that to the second brood -- in fact the second brood received 1.4 times the amount of provisions than the first. However the amount of sugar provided to the two broods was approximately the same, meaning that the second brood had proportionally more pollen.

Over the two years of the study it became apparent that first brood females were always smaller than second brood females, both in terms of head size and fat reserves, but first brood males were not necessarily smaller that the males from the second brood. Nayuta Brand and Michel Chapuisat who performed this study suggest that this is because the foundress is 'choosing' to feed her first generation of daughters less.

Dr Chapuisat explained, "Although it is hard to distinguish parental manipulation from resource availability and resource acquisition, which are influenced by vegetation, weather, seasonal variation, numbers of foragers and more, the fact that we were able to see that first brood female body size remained constant despite pronounced differences in weather strengthens our argument that the foundresses restrict the food of their daughters to drive them into the worker role."

Singer Jenni Rivera presumed dead in plane crash

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) ? Mexico's music world mourned Jenni Rivera, the U.S.-born singer presumed killed in a plane crash whose soulful voice and openness about her personal troubles had made her a Mexican-American superstar.

Authorities have not confirmed her death, but Rivera's relatives in the U.S. say they have few doubts that she was on the Learjet 25 that disintegrated on impact Sunday in rugged territory in Nuevo Leon state in northern Mexico.

"My son Lupillo told me that effectively it was Jenni's plane that crashed and that everyone on board died," her father, Pedro Rivera told dozens of reporters gathered in front of his Los Angeles-area home. "I believe my daughter's body is unrecognizable."

He said that his son would fly to Monterrey early Monday to identify her presumed remains

Messages of condolence poured in from fellow musicians and celebrities.

Mexican songstress and actress Lucero wrote on her Twitter account: "What terrible news! Rest in peace ... My deepest condolences for her family and friends." Rivera's colleague on the Mexican show "The Voice of Mexico," pop star Paulina Rubio, said on her Twitter account: "My friend! Why? There is no consolation. God, please help me!"

Born in Long Beach, California, Rivera was at the peak of her career as perhaps the most successful female singer in grupero, a male-dominated regional style influenced by the norteno, cumbia and ranchero styles.

A 43-year-old mother of five children and grandmother of two, the woman known as the "Diva de la Banda" was known for her frank talk about her struggles to give a good life to her children despite a series of setbacks.

She was recently divorced from her third husband, was once detained at a Mexico City airport with tens of thousands of dollars in cash, and she publicly apologized after her brother assaulted a drunken fan who verbally attacked her in 2011.

Her openness about her personal troubles endeared her to millions in the U.S. and Mexico.

"I am the same as the public, as my fans," she told The Associated Press in an interview last March.

Rivera sold 15 million records, and recently won two Billboard Mexican Music Awards: Female Artist of the Year and Banda Album of the Year for "Joyas prestadas: Banda." She was nominated for Latin Grammys in 2002, 2008 and 2011.

Transportation and Communications Minister Gerardo Ruiz Esparza said "everything points toward" the wreckage belonging to the plane carrying Rivera and six other people to Toluca, outside Mexico City, from Monterrey, where the singer had just given a concert.

"There is nothing recognizable, neither material nor human" in the wreckage found in the state of Nuevo Leon, Ruiz Esparza said. The impact was so powerful that the remains of the plane "are scattered over an area of 250 to 300 meters. It is almost unrecognizable."

A mangled California driver's license with Rivera's name and picture was found in the crash site debris.

No cause was given for the plane's crash, but its wreckage was found near the town of Iturbide in Mexico's Sierra Madre Oriental, where the terrain is very rough.

The Learjet 25, number N345MC, took off from Monterrey at 3:30 a.m. local time and was reported missing about 10 minutes later. It was registered to Starwood Management of Las Vegas, Nevada, according to FAA records. It was built in 1969 and had a current registration through 2015.

Also believed aboard the plane were her publicist, Arturo Rivera, her lawyer, makeup artist and the flight crew.

Though drug trafficking was the theme of some of her songs, she was not considered a singer of "narco corridos," or ballads glorifying drug lords like other groups, such as Los Tigres del Norte. She was better known for singing about her troubles in love and disdain for men.

Her parents were Mexicans who had migrated to the United States. Two of her five brothers, Lupillo and Juan Rivera, are also well-known singers of grupero music.

She studied business administration and formally debuted on the music scene in 1995 with the release of her album "Chacalosa". Due to its success, she recorded two more independent albums, "We Are Rivera" and "Farewell to Selena," a tribute album to slain singer Selena that helped expand her following.

At the end of the 1990s, Rivera was signed by Sony Music and released two more albums. But widespread success came for her when she joined Fonovisa and released her 2005 album titled "Partier, Rebellious and Daring."

Besides being a singer, she is also a businesswoman and actress, appearing in the indie film Filly Brown, which was shown at the Sundance Film Festival, as the incarcerated mother of Filly Brown.

She was filming the third season of "I love Jenni," which followed her as she shared special moments with her children and as she toured through Mexico and the United States. She also has the reality shows: "Jenni Rivera Presents: Chiquis and Raq-C" and her daughter's "Chiquis 'n Control."

In 2009, she was detained at the Mexico City airport when she declared $20,000 in cash but was really carrying $52,167. She was taken into custody. She said it was an innocent mistake and authorities gave her the benefit of the doubt and released her.

In 2011, her brother Juan assaulted a drunken fan at a popular fair in Guanajuato. In the face of heavy criticism among her fans and on social networks, Rivera publicly apologized for the incident during a concert in Mexico City, telling her fans: "Thank you for accepting me as I am, with my virtues and defects."

On Saturday night, Rivera had given a concert before thousands of fans in Monterrey. After the concert she gave a press conference during which she spoke of her emotional state following her recent divorce from former Major League Baseball pitcher Esteban Loaiza, who played for teams including the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers.

"I can't get caught up in the negative because that destroys you. Perhaps trying to move away from my problems and focus on the positive is the best I can do. I am a woman like any other and ugly things happen to me like any other woman," she said Saturday night. "The number of times I have fallen down is the number of times I have gotten up."

Rivera had announced in October that she was divorcing Loaiza after two years of marriage.

There have been several high-profile crashes involving Learjets, known as swift, longer-distance passenger aircraft popular with corporate executives, entertainers and government officials.

A Learjet carrying pro-golfer Payne Stewart and five others crashed in northeastern South Dakota in 1999. Investigators said the plane lost cabin pressure and all on board died after losing consciousness for lack of oxygen. The aircraft flew for several hours on autopilot before running out of fuel and crashing in a corn field.

Former Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker was severely injured in a 2008 Learjet crash in South Carolina that killed four people.

That same year, a Learjet slammed into rush-hour traffic in a posh Mexico City neighborhood, killing Mexico's No. 2 government official, Interior Secretary Juan Camilo Mourino, and eight others on the plane, plus five people on the ground.

Isn't this where diet plans usually come in handy? The short answer is no. This is where diets typically fail. Diet plans do extremely little to alter how we view food. In fact, most diets only serve to inform us which foods are great, which foods are bad, and which foods (normally many of the meals we appreciate most) are strictly taboo. Diets begin by obliging individuals to feel deprived or punished. And no one likes to feel either of these things.

Even worse nevertheless, is that we punish ourselves further when we slip along the straight and extremely narrow paths upon which our diet plans put us. This indicates that we are going to wallow in shame over every little misstep we make until we give up entirely and choose to over indulge as soon as again and neglect the guilt all together.

The trick is in staying the course more days than not and learning small amounts and balance when it comes to wandering off from the straight and narrow.

There are numerous means to fail when it concerns dieting and I understand individuals who have actually failed in virtually each I could potentially envision. As long as you are making constant and continuous efforts and progress, you are doing many excellent things for your health and well being.

Diets do really little to change how we see food. Many diets just serve to inform us which meals are great, which meals are bad, and which foods (usually most of the foods we enjoy most) are strictly taboo. Change your way of seeing food and you will experience remarkable modifications in your perspectives toward your health, your body, and even your physical fitness level. Consistency is extremely important when making these way of living modifications. There is no way to fail, nonetheless, when you are making good changes in your life that are getting good outcomes.

World's oldest dinosaur discovered hanging out in London museum

World's oldest dinosaur: The fossil remains of Nyasasaurus parringtoni were first found in the 1930s near Lake Malawi in Africa. It pushes the date that dinosaurs lived back to 245 million years ago.

Researchers have found what could be the earliest known dinosaur to walk the Earth lurking in the corridors of London's Natural History Museum.

A mysterious fossil specimen that has been in the museum's collection for decades has now been identified as most likely coming from a dinosaur that lived about 245 million years ago - 10 to 15 million years earlier than any previously discovered examples.

The creature was about the size of a Labrador dog and has been named Nyasasaurus parringtoni after southern Africa's Lake Nyasa, today called Lake Malawi, and Cambridge University's Rex Parrington, who collected the specimen at a site near the lake in the 1930s.

"It was a case of looking at the material with a fresh pair of eyes," Paul Barrett from the Natural History Museum, who worked on the study, told Reuters. "This closes a gap in the fossil record and pushes back the existence of dinosaurs."

The London fossil was studied by researchers in the 1950s but no conclusion was reached and nothing was published, said Barrett. "It was a mystery what it was ... It just became this mythical animal."

Two features of the London fossil, together with a similar sample subsequently spotted at the Iziko South African Museum in Cape Town, are strong evidence that the animal belongs with the dinosaurs, the researchers said.

The bone tissues in the upper arm show marks of rapid growth, common in dinosaurs, and they also have a feature known as an elongated deltopectoral crest that anchored the upper arm muscles, a feature unique to dinosaurs.

"Although we only know Nyasasaurus from fossil fragments, the anatomy of its upper arm bone and hips have features that are unique to dinosaurs, making us confident that we're dealing with an animal very close to dinosaur origin," said Barrett.

The researchers believe Nyasasaurus probably stood upright, was a meter tall at the hip, 2-3 meters long from head to tail, and weighed 20-60 kg (44-132 lbs).

When it was alive, the world's continents were joined in a vast landmass called Pangaea, and the area of Tanzania where the fossils were found would have been part of the southern Pangaea that included Africa, South America, Antarctica and Australia.

Theorists have long argued there should have been dinosaurs walking the Earth in the Middle Triassic period, which ended about 237 million years ago, but until now the evidence has been ambiguous, said Sterling Nesbitt at the University of Washington in Seattle who led the study,?published in the journal Biology Letters.

"If the newly named Nyasasaurus parringtoni is not the earliest dinosaur, then it is the closest relative found so far," said Nesbitt.
"What's really neat about this specimen is that it has a lot of history. Found in the '30s, first described in the 1950s ... Now 80 years later, we're putting it all together."

The researchers plan further field work in Tanzania to find more fossils and build a better picture of the animal's anatomy. (Editing by Pravin Char)
