Tobii has managed to impress quite a few folks with its eye-tracking technology -- most recently in the form of the "Eye Asteroids" arcade game -- and it looks like Intel has been paying particularly close attention to the company. As Computer Sweden reports, Intel (or Intel Capital, specifically) has now shelled out roughly $21 million to buy a ten percent stake in the Swedish company, which hopes to soon see its eye-tracking system used in everything from desktops and laptops to phones and even vehicles. Presumably, having Intel at the table will give it a considerable boost in those endeavors.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks were largely flat on Wednesday as investors balanced comments from the Federal Reserve on the economy and banking sector against the recent, five-day rally.
The Fed said most of the largest U.S. banks passed their annual stress test in a report that underscored the recovery of the financial sector but called out a few laggards, including Citigroup Inc.
The Fed also said late Tuesday it expects "moderate" growth over coming quarters with the unemployment rate declining gradually versus the "modest" growth the central bank said it expected in January.
Banks have been a major component of the 11 percent rally in the S&P for the year, with the KBW Bank index <.bkx> up nearly 21 percent and the S&P financial sector index <.gspf> up nearly 18 percent.
"Certainly this is good news for the overall domestic financial system. It really shows banks have turned themselves around, raised capital significantly and are being much smarter and less aggressive about their capital positions, and that should give investors confidence in the system," said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment officer of Solaris Asset Management in Bedford Hills, New York.
"There is constant chatter about a correction ... given we've been pretty much since December on an uninterrupted rise," Ghriskey said.
Bank of America Corp climbed 1.6 percent to $8.63 in early trading. Citigroup Inc dropped 3.6 percent to $35.13 as the biggest drag on the S&P 500.
The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> gained 11.69 points, or 0.09 percent, to 13,189.37. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> shed 0.30 points, or 0.02 percent, to 1,395.65. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> added 2.32 points, or 0.08 percent, to 3,042.20.
The increasing optimism on the U.S. economy helped boost the dollar, which hit an 11-month high against the yen and 1-month high versus the euro.
Data on Wednesday showed import prices rose in February on sharply higher petroleum costs, but there were few signs of underlying imported inflation pressures, and imported capital goods prices edged down 0.1 percent after advancing 0.4 percent in January.
Semiconductors moved higher, led by a 6.6 percent jump in NXP Semiconductors NV to $26.51 after Goldman Sachs added the chip maker to its "conviction buy" list and boosted its price target to $30. The PHLX semiconductor index <.sox> climbed 1.2 percent.
Gaming company Zynga Inc edged up 0.2 percent to $13.40 premarket after the online gaming company announced a $400 million secondary offering.
Despite digital world is changing the way of doing marketing, direct mail still a great tool to engage costumers into products and services.
Postal Service officials say that despite living in an era of digital coupons and contact, direct mail is still one of the most cost effective ways for local businesses to reach customers.
Sebrina Brown, a Richmond-based business development specialist with the U.S. Postal Service, shared that message with area business owners during two sessions at the Northside branch of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library on Tuesday.
The latest offering from the post office is Every Door Direct Mail, a service that?s targeted toward small- and medium-sized businesses that want to reach customers at their doorsteps.
Brown said the main takeaways regarding the new service is that it?s user driven, based on geography, not demographics, and it includes a new web-based tool to help customers choose their areas of focus.
Although certain restrictions apply regarding the size and number of items mailed, in general, customers would pay 14.5 cent per piece.
However, individual mail carrier routes must be saturated ? in other words, every delivery point on the route will receive the item. Since the immediate Charlottesville area has five zip codes, Brown said a business could, in theory, send up to 25,000 pieces per day.
According to an independent review, Brown said, on average, for every $1 spent on direct mail, there?s a return on investment of about $12. Even more impressive, Brown added, is that approximately 75 percent of people who receive direct mail actually read what winds up in their mailboxes.
?Direct mail still is a very good investment for businesses,? Brown said. ?It?s a great way to market. Every touch point ? radio, direct mail, newspapers? is an opportunity for your business to get out in the community and grow.?
Charlottesville postmaster Jeff Lee was among a handful of people to attend one of Tuesday?s two sessions on the new service.
?Everything I?ve seen looks like it?s a good product,? Lee said. ?We?ve always been a good way to advertise house-to-house and this is a good way to break it down into a way that makes the customer happy,?
?The whole intention is to grow businesses,? Lee said. ?When you grow your business, we?ll grow our business and that?s what we?re trying to trying to target with this particular product.?
Few genes control neuronal functionPublic release date: 14-Mar-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

How are 100 billion cells created, each with specific duties? The human brain is evidence that nature can achieve this. Researchers at Linkping University in Sweden have now taken a step closer to solving this mystery.
"Knowledge about the mechanisms that diversify neurons and keep them diverse is necessary in order to cultivate and replace nerve cells in the future," says Mattias Alenius, Assistant Professor of Neuroscience, who has published his research breakthrough in the current issue of the journal PLoS Biology.
Alenius and his research team at the Department of Experimental and Clinical Medicine seek the answer to this pivotal question from a smaller perspective: the fruit fly's olfactory system.
The humble fly's olfactory system consists of 1200 olfactory neurons (humans have six million) divided into 34 groups. Each group responds to a particular set of odours, since all the neurons of the group use only one of the olfactory receptors present in the fly's antennas. Together, the receptors provide the fly with the ability to distinguish between thousands of odours: one olfactory receptor one neuron group, simple yet complex.
Alenius and his colleagues are the first to go through all of the fruit fly's 753 gene regulatory genes, called transcription factors. They have identified a set of seven that, in different combinations, are required to create each of the 34 neuron groups in the antenna. A surprising finding is that most transcription factors perform two tasks simultaneously: they can activate odorant receptors' expression; while at the same time turning off others in the same cell.
Alenius explains, "This is one of the many tricks that are useful to know for the future if you want to make and cultivate each of the many thousands of nerve cell groups that make up our brains."
