Women, arm yourselves. Flu season is approaching. Are you ready?
First let?s be clear about flu shots. Most health-care providers agree that getting your flu shot every year is the single most important step you can take to prevent the flu. Despite what minimal symptoms some of you may experience from receiving the flu vaccine which might include soreness at the site, low grade fever, and body aches,? you are being protected from the more serious complications of the flu. Adults and children can perish from influenza and it is a serious health concern for those who are immunosuppressed.
Next, practice good hand hygiene at home and in public. Have hand sanitizer in your purse for those times soap and water are not available. Keep Kleenex available to so your kiddos are not using their hands or their sleeves for runny noses.
Stock up on over the counter medications for fever and body aches. Speak with your physician about what medications should be used for your kids during flu and cold season. Prepare for child care if your child becomes ill when you are at work. Stock up on juices and water bottles, tea bags, crackers, and fruit for quick snacks and to keep hydrated for the long winter. Take a daily vitamin.
There are no promises that this will keep you from getting the common cold and sore throat. There is not even a promise that you won?t come down with a bout with the flu but eating healthy, using good hygiene, and taking your flu vaccine will go a long way in helping you to be ready for flu season this winter.
